Journal Writing for Composition Classes

Reading,Writing, and Thinking Journals

One thing that you should experience during this class is the power that writing has to clarify your thinking. Ideas will often sit in our head and stew, but there’s never the time to share these ideas out loud and rarely a time to share them in writing. To encourage this, I’d like for you to keep a journal for the entire length of this course.

You must write an entry at least 3 times per week and write a complete page for each entry. Please bring your journal to class, so when we do in-class writing, you can use this journal. You should take about 15 minutes per entry. They do not need to be grammatically correct or always on the coursework. I recommend you write your entry before you start reading or doing homework because it will help focus you on what you need to do.

Each week, you must write at least 1 entry that is focused on something we discussed in class or something you read. I will read these entries when you turn them in.

Due : Twice a semester (the points you earn for these journals will depend on what class you are in). You must date, number, and title each of your entries, AND mark at least two that you would like me to read. Before turning in your journal, I’d like for you to go back through your entries and then write a reflection on what you see in your writing or what you learned by writing regularly.

Topics You Can Write About:

· Articles we’ve read;

· Assignments that are due;

· Other classes;

· Stress;

· Friends, family, and love;

· Anything that comes to mind.
